"But Claib Maggard and Harm Sorley stayed here."

"They did, indeed. Claib managed to insinuate himself into local government, so he got whatever pickings there were from state money, federal projects, and what-all. He wasn't hurting any. He always made sure of that. And Harm? Well, the Sorleys weren't much on holding down regular jobs. They mostly ran moonshine, and took to logging, preaching, mining, or gambling, depending upon their inclinations. Those that lived past forty took up farming. You've heard tell of the Sorley clan, haven't you? There's ballads written about them."

Henry Kretzer shook his head. "I don't know much about Harm's roots. It isn't mentioned in the newspapers I looked in. Is there a ballad about Harm? I'd like to play it on my show."

"Not about Harm," said Dallas Stuart with an impatient sigh. "He's recent. Small potatoes. His uncle Dal-ton was hanged back at the turn of the century, after killing a few people and constituting a one-man crime wave between here and Bristol. And in the generation before that, a young Sorley—name of Ventriss—was ambushed by Confederate troops on a furlough home from the War. They cut his throat, and tied him to his horse, so that he turned up at his homeplace on the point of death. They say his mother went out to meet him, and he fell off the horse and died at her feet. People used to sing a ballad about him when I was a young'un. I guess I haven't heard it in forty years,
